Maya – Movie Preview

After a never-ending line-up of horror-comedies, here comes a genuine horror thriller from a debutant film-maker. Maya, directed by Ashwin Saravanan, looks promising from the first look visuals shown in the trailer. The film, starring Nayanthara in the titular role as Maya Mathews, has piqued the curiosity of movie-goers who crave for authentic horror flicks in Tamil cinema along the lines of Eeram and Yaavarum Nalam. And to the surprise of cinephiles, the director has promised them the same experience.

In his interview to Only Kollywood, Ashwin said,

Maya will be a genuine supernatural horror film sans any comedy or romance elements. It will be as real as Yaavarum Nalam and Eeram with bonafide supernatural factors aided by genuine horror and emotional aspects

Maya also marks the production debut of Dream Warrior Pictures headed by Prabhu SR, who branched out from Gnanavelraja’s Studio Green to set up his own banner.

Nayanthara, who is basking in the glory of Thani Oruvan, will be eagerly looking forward to the release of Maya since her last women-centric Tamil film Nee Enge En Anbe, the official remake of Kahaani, was not received well at the box office.

The album composed by Ron Yohan has already received accolades from music buffs. The team has recorded the background score for the movie in a Symphony Orchestra at Macedonia to offer viewers an international quality sound experience.

Ashwin on working with Nayanthara and his inspiration behind Maya

I narrated the script as it was on paper and didn’t change anything to suit Nayan. She was pretty okay; she used to watch many horror films so she understood the essence of the script. She could understand my vision and what I expected, so it was quite easy for me. Nayanthara was very cooperative when we told her that we want to use minimal makeup. Her energy level on the sets was remarkable.

I used to watch Marma Desam and Vidadhu Karuppu avidly. So I wanted to make a film which is story-centric and devoid of forced elements in the script. Basically I have made a movie which I always wanted to watch.

Maya will have to compete with GV Prakash’s Trisha Illana Nayanthara and Goundamani’s 49 O at the box office for the Vinayagar Chaturthi weekend from September 17th.
