Kamal Haasan brings back Sandiyar title for his next film with SU Arun Kumar

Kamal Haasan's upcoming film with SU Arun Kumar has been officially titled Sandiyar, bringing back the name originally chosen for his 2004 film Virumaandi, which was later changed following protests.

Kamal Haasan’s upcoming film with director SU Arun Kumar has finally received its official title. The makers have announced that the project, previously known by its working title KH237, will be called Sandiyar. The announcement came with an intense new poster featuring the veteran actor in a rugged avatar. Produced by Kamal Haasan and R Mahendran under the Raaj Kamal Films International banner, the film has already generated considerable interest among fans.

The newly released poster presents Kamal Haasan in a striking rural action avatar. Sporting grey hair and a thick moustache, the actor is seen holding a firearm beside a vehicle marked with blood. His intense appearance hints at the film’s violent revenge-driven narrative. The poster also carries the tagline, ‘Revenge can only be settled in blood’, further building anticipation around the project.

Interestingly, Sandiyar has a significant connection to Kamal Haasan’s filmography. It was originally the title chosen for his 2004 directorial venture, which eventually reached theatres as Virumaandi. However, the title faced strong opposition from certain political groups, who argued that it could glorify caste-based violence. Following the controversy and protests, Kamal Haasan decided to change the title to Virumaandi. More than two decades later, the actor has brought back the original title for his collaboration with SU Arun Kumar.

The film marks Kamal Haasan’s first collaboration with SU Arun Kumar, who is known for directing films such as Pannaiyarum Padminiyum, Sethupathi, Sindhubaadh, Chiththa and Veera Dheera Sooran. The director has earned recognition for his grounded storytelling and strong character-driven narratives. His collaboration with Kamal Haasan has raised expectations, especially with the film reportedly exploring a rural revenge drama set against the backdrop of Madurai.

On the technical front, Anirudh Ravichander is composing the music, marking another collaboration with Kamal Haasan after Vikram and Indian 2. Acclaimed stunt choreographers Anbariv are handling the action sequences. The technical team also includes cinematographer Sunil KS and production designer CS Balachandar. The film’s initial promotional posters, featuring Kamal Haasan with a sword and a gun, have further hinted at an intense action-oriented narrative.

Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan has several interesting projects lined up. He is set to reunite with Rajinikanth on screen after several decades in a film directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. He is also associated with Kalki 2, Indian 3 and continues to back projects under his production banner. With the title Sandiyar now officially confirmed, the upcoming collaboration with SU Arun Kumar has added another intriguing project to the veteran actor’s lineup.
