A fair, visually splendid big screen experience!

The Lion King is a good theatrical experience if you wish to relive the film we’ve all loved. There are some dry patches in the second half which break down the flow of the film, but nevertheless, you will have fun if you take your kids along!

Childhood would be incomplete without The Lion King, which is easily one of the best memories that any Hollywood fan would have carried forward. The film’s simple but heartfelt story captured our hearts, in addition to the memorable characters whose names we cannot forget. And now, the film gets its live action version, and tries to impress us with a bigger load of technical wizardry and visual splendor.

Jon Favreau seems to have developed a strong liking towards yesteryear’s classics, fixing it as an opportunity to work on such films back to back. Jungle Book’s masterful success round the globe is indeed the fire up for The Lion King, as the director maintains the same standard in terms of the experience that it provides. Both in terms of its visuals and the sound, The Lion King stands up as an excellent watch with wonderful colors and the imaginative portrayal of the jungle. However, the film could have done with some more heart in its proceedings, as it safely sticks to the same route of the original and does not wish to experiment, even by a millimeter. And this is where the cards fall down, as it may turn out to be a little less engaging for those who have already seen and loved the original.

Despite the flaws of the film, what actually pulls it up is the fact that the makers made a superb choice by deciding to dub the film with well-known voices from across the industry. Out of all the names in the frame, Arvind Swami takes the cake with his absolutely majestic voice that brings out the evilness of Scar in full force. Siddharth is at his free-flowing best, with more power in the songs which he croons on his own. The three comical contributors in Manobala, Robo Shankar and Singam Puli manage to crack you up at many occasions, which also brings about a good connect to the film. This is one of the rare occasions where the Tamil dubbed version may engage you more than the English one.

On the whole, The Lion King is a good theatrical experience if you wish to relive the film we’ve all loved. There are some dry patches in the second half which break down the flow of the film, but nevertheless, you will have fun if you take your kids along!
