Ponniyin Selvan 2 (PS2) Songs Review
A soaring, splendid soundtrack from AR Rahman that delivers the grandeur!
Veera Raja Veera
Aazhi Mazhai Kanna
Aga Naga: Singer – Shaktisree Gopalan 👍
AR Rahman delivers just the beautiful melody that you expect from him, and this is not a song that sounds good in the 30 seconds that featured in the first part. Shaktisree Gopalan’s pronunciation is on point, and there are so many nice bits in the lyrics that deserve praise. A winner from Rahman, first up!
Veera Raja Veera: Singers – Shankar Mahadevan, KS Chitra, Harini, Chorus 👍
An absolute beauty from AR Rahman that is honey-dipped in a carnatic base that is tough to stay away from. The vocal arrangements between the three singers is so seamless, and with the Indian instrumentations being pitch perfect, there is no looking back. This is the song of the year so far, and it is not going to be easy to beat it.
Chinnanjiru: Singer – Haricharan 👍
AR Rahman’s recent love for extremely minimalistic melodies continues with this one as well, as he gives it just a tinge of music and leaves the rest to Haricharan who does a fantastic job on the mic. There are shades of class all over the song, and this is a song that is sure to cling onto you, asking for repeated listens.
Aazhi Mazhai Kanna: Singer – Harini
A decent, charming song that brings back Harini’s vocals in the way we have celebrated her in the late 90s. A lovely rendition from her, leading to a fine track.
Ilaiyor Soodaar: Singer – Keerthana Vaidyanathan, Niranjana Ramanan, Vaishnavi Kannan
Another song with a carnatic base that works with a chorus setup. The composer keeps it minimal again, and that is the icing on the cake.
Shivoham: Singers – Sathyaprakash, Dr Narayanan, Sreekanth Hariharan, Nivas, Aravind Srinivas, Shenbhagaraj
A chant-like song that works well in another chorus setup, with the male vocals coming together as one.
Chinnanjuru (Marumurai): Singer – Khatija Rahman
A reprise of the third track, which works so wonderfully and brings out a special new layer to the original. Another wonderfully rendered song that spikes a surprise addition to the album.
On the whole, the PS2 album is not as grand and variant as its predecessor, but it is more of a film-centric soundtrack that shines in the right ways. The songs have been carefully constructed by AR Rahman, who brings in the grandeur that we expect from his music and also shows the way forward with respect to the orchestrations.
