Sekhar Kammula’s films in the past have always brought up some form of life and social issues and in the same way, he brings in Kuberaa which pits a beggar against a big corporate group who use him for their money laundering.

The film has an exciting plot and it makes great use of it in the first half where it brings many good scenes together and keeps the ball rolling. After that, it begins to take a dip and the pace slackens, and the film moves to the search for the lead character, which moves away from the initial intent of the film. The second half is a mix of two – utterly realistic situations with treatment that comes with a commercial angle in it. Kuberaa starts blowing hot and cold – there are many sequences that stand out with the use of the performances and situations, but somewhere, it feels like it does not gel well together.

The film benefits big time from the performance of Dhanush – he is superb in a role that demands multiple looks, dialogue modulations, emotional turmoil and a long journey. This is one of the best performances in his career for sure.

Nagarjuna’s character has multiple shades and it is nice to see him in such a role, he has done very well. Rashmika showcases that she is consistently picking up the right scripts and acing them.

The cinematography has some really good frames at parts and when it comes into closed doors, it feels a little too realistic. The songs and background score by Devi Sri Prasad don’t quite hit the mark and could have been more impactful, as the film would have benefited from stronger musical support.

On the whole, Kuberaa is a good show thanks to the performances and the intent that it brings. Dhanush, Nagarjuna and a good list of solid sequences put together a film worth watching.

Kuberaa Movie Rating: 3.5/5
