Tamil scholar and television icon Solomon Pappaiah passes away at 90 in Madurai, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Tamil literature, pattimandram and cinema.
Renowned Tamil scholar and television personality Solomon Pappaiah passed away in Madurai on Sep 11th Friday at the age of 90. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital and died following age-related ailments. His demise marks the loss of one of Tamil Nadu’s most recognizable voices in television and public discourse.
Solomon Pappaiah was widely known for moderating pattimandram programmes on television. Over the years, his engaging style, wit and command over the Tamil language helped make these debate forums popular with audiences. His programmes often explored social themes while presenting different perspectives in an accessible manner.
Born in Sathangudi near Madurai, Solomon Pappaiah also had a notable presence in Tamil cinema. He appeared in films including Pudhu Varusham, Boys, Yes Madam and Shankar’s Sivaji: The Boss. His appearance in Sivaji introduced his characteristic humor to a wider cinema audience and remains one of his better-known screen appearances.
Beyond television and cinema, Solomon Pappaiah made significant contributions to Tamil scholarship. His long association with Tamil literature and public speaking earned him several honours. He was conferred the Kalaimamani award in 2000 and received the Padma Shri in 2021 in recognition of his contribution.
