Tovino Thomas’ Narivettai (in tamil), coming from Anuraj Manohar who earlier made Ishq, is a cop-political drama that takes place with a forest backdrop.
The film has Tovino playing a disinterested cop, who gets into the job after compulsions from family, and is not even interested to join the force in a new mission. After some coercing from his mates, he finally gets on the bus and befriends Basheer (Suraj Venjaramoodu) who helps him get into the groove. The following events showcase what happens in the new baseline at Wayanad, where they are put face to face with a Maoist tribal group. Here, the lead character uncovers some unusual happenings, and his reactions to the same form the crux of the film.
Narivetta has a very slow and step by step first half that has a long drawn out emotional track which is not so necessary to the storyline. The film takes a lot of time to get to the point, and it is only in the second half that things move into the flow properly. The emotional climax may be impactful for the audiences, and how the viewer absorbs it forms the result of the film.
Tovino has done well in the film, he has a very good role to play and has offered another terrific performance. His single shot sequence amidst the fight with the tribals is laudable. Suraj Venjaramoodu is another good addition to the casting and his role as Basheer creates an impact. However, Cheran does not live up to the strength of the character and could have done better.
The film has very good cinematography and the BGM by Jakes Bejoy also works out well.
Narivetta does have some interesting parts, but the generic approach to the proceedings hampers the flow a bit. Nevertheless, it will be an engaging watch for those who like serious dramas.
