Irudhi Suttru Movie Preview

After a middling debut in Dhrogi, director Sudha Kongara Prasad is all set for her sophomore effort Irudhi Suttru which hits cinemas on January 29th worldwide. Sports-based films come once in a blue moon in Tamil cinema and in a plot centered on boxing with a woman film-maker at the helm, the combination becomes just exciting. Madhavan is longing to make a comeback in Tamil with Irudhi Suttru after a lackluster last outing with Vettai, which released in 2012.

As all sports-dramas, the plot revolves around a boxing coach, played by Madhavan, who trains an underdog, played by real-life boxer Ritika Singh, to become a boxing champion. The first look promos of the film, including the teaser, trailer and the impressively cut tv spot videos, have received overwhelming response from cinephiles on social media platforms, already drawing comparisons to Shah Rukh Khan’s superhit Chak De! India and Priyanka Chopra’s acclaimed biopic Mary Kom.

Santhosh Narayanan’s sensational tunes have been topping the charts ever since the audio was launched. If cinematographer Sivakumar Vijayan’s picture-perfect frames in the trailer and his terrific debut in Vidiyum Munn are anything to go by, we are in for a lovely visual treat in Irudhi Suttru. Sathish Suriya, a former protege of veteran editor Sreekar Prasad, has been mentored by Rajkumar Hirani for the film and his work is evident in the crisp, slick promo videos that have created huge buzz among film buffs.

Apart from the underlying theme ‘boxing’, the film also focusses on the lovely relationship between two individuals.

Madhavan on his role

This is the most physically-challenging role I have done in my career so far. I spent close to two years in the gym, trying to look the part, even though we only shot for 44 days

I’m playing the role of a retired boxer who is a coach actually. He is outspoken and eccentric. It’s a story of how he meets a 17-year-old girl in whom he sees his past self

This film is about two persons from very different society and both are disliked by others because of their uncompromising attitude and straight forwardness

Director Sudha Kongara Prasad

Most of the scenes in the film were born out of my research. Every scene is from the character I’ve met and spoken to on this journey. There’s so much drama in the lives of boxers.

Boxer Ritika Singh

I was crazy about martial arts. At at the age of three, I started training in karate. I never thought of acting in films. It was a different experience for me. I do fight in the ring but there is a difference between real and reel life. I had to be easy and slow

Produced by UTV Motion Pictures, Irudhi Suttru will confront director Sundar C’s multi-starrer Aranmanai 2 at the box-office on January 29th.
