DC Movie Review: An unfiltered action thriller that hits hard

After Rocky, Saani Kaayidham and Captain Miller, director Arun Matheswaran returns with another intense action entertainer. This time, he introduces filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj as the lead actor in DC. Backed by Sun Pictures and powered by Anirudh’s music, the film stays true to Arun’s signature style. It is brutal, violent and unapologetically raw. At the same time, the director does not forget the emotional core, making DC much more than just another action film.

The story revolves around a young boy whose father is brutally murdered by corrupt police officers. Determined to fulfill the child’s dream of education, Arasu (Thalaivasal Vijay) leads a group consisting of Devadas (Lokesh Kanagaraj), Sebastian, Karuppu and Kitty. Although the police brand them as gangsters and extremists, the film clearly establishes that they fight against powerful people who exploit ordinary citizens. As a result, the gang earns the audience’s sympathy from the very beginning.

Soon, the police launch an aggressive hunt for the gang. This sets up an engaging cat-and-mouse game that drives the narrative forward. During their escape, the gang reaches a hideout where Devadas meets Parvathy (Sanjana Krishnamoorthy). Their meeting brings an emotional pause before the film shifts back into action mode. Soon after, Chandra (Wamiqa Gabbi) enters the story, leading to several unexpected developments. Director Arun Matheswaran rightly describes this stretch as “Madness meets Madness.” Moreover, the pre-interval action block turns out to be one of the finest moments in the film. Anirudh’s “Rage of Revenge” score completely elevates the sequence and leaves a massive impact.

The second half continues the relentless chase between the police and the gang. This time, Chandra also becomes an important part of the conflict. Interestingly, the screenplay keeps introducing new twists, betrayals and emotional moments. Therefore, the narrative never loses its grip despite the continuous action. Even with the overload of actions, the story keeps moving smoothly. More importantly, the 142-minute runtime never feels stretched because every sequence serves a purpose.

Lokesh Kanagaraj delivers a remarkable performance in his acting debut. He looks completely comfortable in the role of Devadas and never gives the feeling of a first-time actor. His body language suits the character perfectly, while his emotional scenes work equally well. However, it is during the action sequences that he truly shines. His dedication and physical preparation deserve appreciation, as every stunt appears convincing on screen. This is undoubtedly a surprising and confident debut from the filmmaker.

Wamiqa Gabbi is another major strength of the film. She fits the role of Chandra perfectly and brings both intensity and confidence to the character. Furthermore, her climactic action sequence alongside Lokesh is an absolute treat to watch. Sanjana Krishnamoorthy appears only for a brief period, yet she leaves a lasting impression as Parvathy. The actor who plays Kitty also deserves a special mention for his fierce screen presence and intriguing performance. Meanwhile, Thalaivasal Vijay and the remaining supporting cast perform their roles sincerely and contribute well to the overall impact.

Technically, DC is outstanding. Once again, Anirudh proves why he remains one of the biggest strengths of Tamil cinema. His background score creates goosebumps throughout the film and lifts several action blocks to another level. In particular, “Rage of Revenge” stands out as one of his finest compositions in recent times. Likewise, PC Stunts deserves applause for designing raw, realistic and whistle-worthy action sequences. Mukesh’s cinematography beautifully captures the dark world of the film through striking visuals. At the same time, GK Prasanna ensures that the 142-minute runtime moves at a brisk pace, with hardly any noticeable lag or unnecessary stretches.

Arun Matheswaran once again showcases his signature filmmaking style by unleashing another uncompromising action drama. This time, he finds an ideal performer in Lokesh Kanagaraj to bring his vision alive. While the film is packed with brutal action, it never forgets its emotional foundation, which ultimately gives weight to every conflict. Credit also goes to writers Arun Ranjan and Franklin Jacob, whose writing successfully balances action, emotions and character motivations without losing focus on the central narrative. Their contribution helps DC remain emotionally engaging despite its relentless action.

Overall, DC is a thoroughly engaging adrenaline rush that delivers action in its rawest form without sacrificing emotional depth. The makers also deserve appreciation for retaining the film’s A certificate instead of compromising the content for a wider audience. With powerful performances, exceptional technical craftsmanship, relentless action and solid emotional backing, DC stands tall as an uncompromising theatrical experience. If you enjoy hard-hitting action films with meaningful emotions, this is undoubtedly a film that deserves to be experienced on the big screen.
