Blast Movie Review: A solid martial arts family entertainer that works

Blast follows the story of a middle-class family trained in martial arts. Arjun plays a martial arts trainer who believes people must always fight against injustice. He raises his daughter Nila, played by Preity Mukhundhan, with the same ideology. Meanwhile, Abhirami plays his wife and also shares a martial arts background. Their peaceful life changes after they cross paths with a dangerous gangster group involved in a massive illegal deal worth thousands of crores.

The first half of Blast focuses mainly on the family setup and emotional bonding. Director Subash K Raj takes time to establish the lead characters and their principles. The martial arts backdrop gives freshness to the film. In addition, the emotional moments between the family members work well. The conflict begins slowly when the family gets connected to the gangsters played by Arjun Chidambaram, Pawan, and John Kokken. Though the narrative follows a familiar commercial format, the screenplay keeps the audience engaged.

The second half of Blast shifts fully into action mode. From here, the film moves at a faster pace and delivers several turns. The action blocks arrive one after another and keep the momentum alive. Even though the core story remains simple, the treatment makes a difference. Director Subash K Raj mixes action, emotions, and commercial elements effectively.

Arjun fits perfectly into the role and handles the action scenes with ease. However, Preity Mukhundhan steals the spotlight with her energetic screen presence and impressive martial arts performance. She performs the action sequences confidently and leaves a strong impact. At the same time, Abhirami delivers a neat performance in both emotional and action-oriented scenes.

Vivek Prasanna also surprises in a different avatar and adds value to the narrative. The supporting cast, including Arjun Chidambaram, Pawan, John Kokken, and Dilipan, perform their roles effectively.

Technically, Ravi Basrur’s background score adds energy to the action scenes. Moreover, Phoenix Prabhu’s stunt choreography stands out as one of the film’s biggest strengths. Arun Radhakrishnan’s cinematography also enhances the overall visual quality with stylish frames and neat presentation. The film maintains good technical standards throughout.

Overall, Blast works as a solid action family entertainer with a refreshing martial arts backdrop. The film may have a familiar storyline, but the engaging treatment and strong action moments make it enjoyable. Director Subash K Raj makes a promising debut with this commercial entertainer.
