AR Rahman opens up about collaborating with Hans Zimmer for epic Ramayana

Director Nitesh Tiwari, known for the global blockbuster Dangal (which grossed over 2000 crore worldwide), is now helming Ramayana, touted to be one of the most ambitious and expensive Indian films ever made. Produced by Namit Malhotra and Kannada star Yash, the film boasts a stellar cast and world-class technical team.

Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Rama, Yash takes on the role of Ravana, and Sai Pallavi stars as Sita. Visual effects are being handled by DNEG, the Oscar-winning VFX studio behind several Hollywood hits.

Adding to the film’s global appeal, music is being composed by A.R. Rahman and legendary Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer, marking their first-ever collaboration. Speaking to Connect Cine, Rahman shared his excitement about the partnership.

“Who would’ve thought I’d work with Hans Zimmer on such a grand project?” said Rahman. “Our sessions happened in London, LA, and Dubai, went really well. He’s genuinely curious about Indian culture and is open to feedback. During our discussions, he asked, ‘Can I bring a Western perspective to this?’ I was very impressed.”

The film will be released in two parts; the first in Diwali 2026, and the second in Diwali 2027.
