Films made on epic stories of Indian mythology are known for their rightful adaptations in the past, but for a change, a director takes the core of the Indian epic Ramayana, and creates his own modernised version of the same. But does it make sense this time? Not at all.
Director Om Raut’s Adipurush is a re-telling of the Ramayana with the story drawn forth in the same manner, and only the setting changed to the director’s own imagination. Adipurush starts from few days before Sita is abducted by Ravana in the story of Ramayana, and takes it forward from there as an action packed VFX-heavy film. However, the problem with the film is that it does not take itself seriously, and the world-building by the director is done on his own terms without having any responsibility to align it with the already famous epic story of Ramayana.
Om Raut takes a truckload of cinematic liberties, starting off by majorly setting the film in a night scape, where all we have read about the story is about it being in the day. The world of Lanka is also picturised on Asgard and Wakanda, as there is nothing realistic about it and it feels like a thing of the future rather than something from the past. Also, it is funny to see the characters in Lanka looking and behaving like ones we have seen in Hollywood films. In addition to that, there is hardly anything good to say about the VFX of the film, which turns out to be an eyesore.
At least, the first half of Adipurush has a couple of good action sequences and some neat drama, but it is the second half which is utterly pathetic and has nothing going for.
Here, Om Raut has one action sequence after another, and even where he gets some breathing space, he opts for a boring monologue which nobody cares about.
The plus points in Adipurush are only two – one being the music by Ajay-Atul and the second being the character of Hanuman who gets a lot of cheers from the audiences. The film does not benefit from the presence of stars like Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and Saif Ali Khan because it is busy giving them dumb things to do onscreen.
On the whole, Adipurush is a complete bummer and a waste of time if you are above the age of 18. Adipurush Movie Review by Only Kollywood
