Bharathiraja passes away: Tamil cinema loses one of its greatest visionaries

Tamil cinema bids farewell to legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja, whose groundbreaking storytelling, rural narratives, and unforgettable classics redefined the industry for generations.

Veteran filmmaker and actor Bharathiraja, widely regarded as one of the most influential personalities in Indian cinema, passed away in Chennai on June 10, 2026, due to age-related health complications. He was 84. His demise marks the end of an era in Tamil cinema, leaving behind a legacy that transformed the way stories were told on the silver screen.

Known as “Iyakkunar Imayam” among film lovers, Bharathiraja revolutionized Tamil cinema by taking cameras out of studio floors and into real village landscapes. His films brought authenticity, emotional depth, and rural culture to the forefront, creating a new cinematic language that influenced generations of filmmakers.

Making his directorial debut with the landmark film 16 Vayathinile in 1977, Bharathiraja went on to deliver several classics, including Alaigal Oivathillai, Mudhal Mariyathai, Sigappu Rojakkal, Kizhakku Cheemayile and Karuthamma. Throughout a career spanning nearly five decades, he introduced numerous talents to the industry and played a vital role in shaping modern Tamil cinema.

Apart from directing, Bharathiraja also earned acclaim as an actor in several memorable roles. His contributions were recognized with multiple National Film Awards and the prestigious Padma Shri.

Tributes have poured in from across the film fraternity, political leaders, and fans worldwide. The Tamil Nadu government has announced state honours for his final rites, acknowledging his immense contribution to cinema and culture.
