Vetrimaaran opens up on STR 49, Vada Chennai universe, and his unique filmmaking approach

Vetrimaaran revisits his original Vada Chennai vision with STR49, expands the North Madras universe, and sheds light on future plans, including Vada Chennai 2.

In his recent interaction with the The Hollywood Reporter India, acclaimed filmmaker Vetrimaaran has revealed intriguing details about his upcoming project STR 49, starring Silambarasan TR, and how it ties into the world of his earlier film, Vada Chennai. Speaking candidly about the film’s origins, he shared that STR49 is based on the original script he had written for Vada Chennai, which was initially planned with Silambarasan in the lead. However, when the film eventually took shape with Dhanush, large portions of that original vision were left out.

Now, with STR49, Vetrimaaran is revisiting that material. The film is set in the same timeline and universe as Vada Chennai, with familiar characters appearing throughout the story to heighten the drama. However, this will be a standalone film that takes place in a different part of North Madras, with Silambarasan TR leading the narrative. Dhanush will not be a part of this film.

On the much-anticipated sequel, Vetrimaaran confirmed that Vada Chennai 2 will begin after the completion of STR 49, although the timeline remains uncertain. He also revealed that a sequel with Dhanush was originally planned right after the first film, but it didn’t materialize because producer Thanu requested a fresh script, which eventually led to the creation of Asuran.

Vetrimaaran also spoke about his unconventional film-making process. He admitted that he doesn’t give actors a completed script, as he prefers to develop scenes organically during production. According to him, actors arrive on set not knowing exactly what will be shot that day, and many are aware not to rely on his first draft. While some actors are comfortable with this creative chaos, others find it difficult and choose not to work with him.

Reflecting on his critically acclaimed film Visaranai, Vetrimaaran recalled the dedication of everyone involved. He mentioned that neither he nor the key contributors, Dinesh, GV Prakash, and Kishore took any salary for the project. He approached Dhanush for 2.5 crores to fund the film, and Dhanush provided it without even hearing the script. He even spent an additional 3.5 crores on the Oscar campaign for the film, which ultimately grossed 3.85 crores. Vetrimaaran noted that it’s rare to find a producer as supportive and trusting as Dhanush.

As STR49 gears up for production, it promises to be a compelling addition to the Vada Chennai universe, with Vetrimaaran once again diving deep into the layered and gritty world of North Madras.

Also, during the press interaction following the screening of Bad Girl yesterday, Vetrimaaran revealed that an official update on his highly anticipated film Vaadi Vaasal starring Suriya will be released within the next 10 days.
