Pa. Ranjith opens up about the story of Madras

Director Pa. Ranjith has opened up about the basic premise of his soon-to-be-released Karthi-starrer Madras which has Catherine Tresa playing the female lead. The film was initially titled Kaali, then changed to Kabali before it eventually became Madras, the title which Pa. Ranjith thought of only during the post-production. “We shot throughout with a working title on this script which was primarily about the lives of people in north Madras. So, when Madras came to my mind, it was perfect,” says Ranjith to a daily.

“People from here have contributed so much to the founding of the city, but we seldom remember it. Just look at the poor roads and the lack of infrastructure. They are such a contrast to south Madras. One can’t even find an ATM machine in some areas near Vyasarpadi. In quite a few movies, they are depicted as goondas. I’ve tried to highlight the fact that not all the people here are like that,” adds Ranjith about the story and the people of North Madras in general.
