Vijay’s Jana Nayagan won’t hit screens before April 30, Canadian distributor confirms

Canadian distributor confirms the Vijay starrer will not arrive in theatres before April end, extending the wait for fans worldwide.

The much-anticipated Tamil film Jana Nayagan – widely expected to be Vijay’s final movie before his full-time shift into politics has encountered yet another delay in its theatrical release. According to a statement from Canadian distributor York Cinemas, the action drama will not be released before April 30, 2026, extending the wait for fans around the world.

The update comes after Jana Nayagan missed its original January 9 release date, which was expected to coincide with the Pongal festival and Vijay’s birthday window. The film’s delay stems from ongoing issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which has yet to issue a final certificate needed for theatrical distribution. Earlier attempts to resolve the matter through legal channels were withdrawn by the makers, leaving the project in a state of uncertainty.

In its social media post shared via X, York Cinemas advised patrons that the movie would not arrive in theatres before April 30. The notice also urged ticket holders whose bookings had not been refunded to contact their local cinemas for processing. VIP members, the distributor added, may receive priority booking access once a new release date is finalised, though no official launch date has been confirmed by the production team.

The postponement has sparked discussion among fans and industry observers, with many speculating that the film’s release could now align with the conclusion of the Tamil Nadu State Assembly elections or be pushed further into the summer. Meanwhile, the re-release of Vijay’s 2016 blockbuster Theri on February 20 has been confirmed to fill the gap left by Jana Nayagan’s prolonged absence from the release calendar.

Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan features an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Prakash Raj, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Narain, and Priyamani. The film has generated significant anticipation due to its subject matter, scale, and Vijay’s announced retirement from cinema.

As the certification process continues and fans await further updates from the makers, Jana Nayagan remains one of the most talked-about Tamil films of the year, with expectations high for a major release once the remaining hurdles are cleared.
