Tamil cinema strike put on hold following assurance from Tamil Nadu government
The producers’ bodies have deferred their proposed strike after the Tamil Nadu government assured them of discussions to address key issues facing the film industry.
The Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) and Tamil Film Active Producers Association (TFAPA) have decided to postpone their proposed strike from September 1 following an assurance from the Tamil Nadu government to intervene in the ongoing issues affecting the film industry.
The producers’ bodies had earlier announced that no new Tamil films would be released in theatres from September 1. They had also planned to halt film shootings and post-production activities from the same date. The decision came amid an ongoing disagreement between producers, distributors and theatre owners over the theatrical-to-OTT release window.
Representatives from the two producers’ associations met Tamil Nadu Minister for Film Technology and Cinematograph Act Rajmohan at the State Secretariat in Chennai on August 26. During the meeting, they submitted a memorandum outlining the issues currently affecting the Tamil film industry.
Following discussions, the minister reportedly assured the producers that the government would look into their concerns. He also advised the Federation of Film Distributors’ Associations and the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners’ Association to continue following the existing procedures for film releases in the state.
The government is also expected to convene a tripartite meeting involving producers, distributors and theatre owners after the ongoing Assembly session concludes. The discussions are aimed at finding a solution to the issues surrounding film releases and the OTT window.
The producers’ associations further stated that the matter would be brought to the attention of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The proposed tripartite discussions are expected to take place under the Chief Minister’s guidance, with the aim of arriving at a permanent solution.
In view of the government’s assurances, the TFPC and TFAPA have now decided to postpone the strike announced for September 1. The development comes as a relief to the Tamil film industry, particularly filmmakers and upcoming releases that could have faced disruption if the proposed shutdown had gone ahead.
