Surrender Tamil Movie, starring Bigg Boss-fame Tharshan is a grounded and gripping thriller that dares to break away from the usual commercial formulas. With no heroine, no songs and no romantic distractions, the film sticks to the dark and focused storytelling pattern.
The plot of the film revolves around a police group and a gang of rowdies, and how their paths intertwine in the pre-election season. The film does take about 20 minutes to pick up, but from there on, it keeps giving some interesting turns that manage to keep us engaged until the end. The film benefits from the use of some realistic episodes, apart from the performances of its trio – Tharshan is very good as a determined young cop, bringing intensity and restraint to his showcase. Sujith Shankar does a good job again after Rasavathi, and plays the main baddie in the film. Lal adds depth to the film with his composed and reliable performance which takes it through. Credit to director Gowthaman for his efforts to stay true to the story without diluting it for mainstream appeal.
Technically, the film is good with tight editing, atmospheric cinematography and BGM that fits the mood. The raw feel of the film is laudable – be it the dialogues, staging or pacing, it adds to the intensity and authenticity, though at times, the lack of emotional depth in the film shows up.
Surrender may not aim for mass strength, but the film carves its niche with sharp writing and minimalistic execution. It does not have heavily emotional highs or offer visual flamboyance, but it packs enough to keep one invested. A slightly tighter narrative would have helped it higher, but the film still joins the list of good thrillers this year.
