Actor couple Suriya and Jyothika recently spoke candidly about their personal and professional journey during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. From revealing why they have not shared screen space after marriage to discussing the challenges behind Karuppu, the learning experience from Kanguva, and updates on his upcoming projects, Suriya had several interesting insights to share.

Why haven’t Suriya and Jyothika acted together after marriage?

Suriya said they do not want to approach filmmakers with the intention of making a film featuring both of them. Instead, they prefer the collaboration to happen naturally if the right script comes their way.

Jyothika added that, surprisingly, no filmmaker has approached them with a script in the last 25 years. According to her, audiences continued to love them as a couple, but the industry stopped looking at them as an on-screen pair after their marriage. She revealed that they have never even had an opportunity to accept or reject a script together because none has been offered.

Suriya recalls emotional Karuppu climax reshoot

Speaking about the climax of Karuppu, Suriya revealed that the makers decided to revisit the sequence nearly six months after the film had been wrapped.

The actor shared that he had already shaved his beard for Vishwanath and Sons when director RJ Balaji informed him that he was not satisfied with the climax. The team reshot the sequence over two days.

Suriya admitted that the climax involved an emotionally intense performance and acknowledged that a similar approach had already been explored by another actor, referring to Rishab Shetty’s acclaimed performance in Kantara. Since comparisons were inevitable, he believed the sequence could either succeed or fail completely.

He also recalled a memorable moment during filming, saying there was a statue of Karuppu Samy behind the camera. Before filming the scene, he silently prayed for divine guidance and strength to perform the emotionally demanding sequence.

Lessons from Kanguva and Karuppu

Reflecting on the contrasting journeys of Kanguva and Karuppu, Suriya admitted that filmmaking remains unpredictable despite three decades in cinema.

He explained that a film made with immense trust over nearly 200 shooting days may not always deliver the expected result, while another completed in just 45 days can become the biggest blockbuster of the year.

The actor said the experience reminded him that there is always something new to learn and unlearn, adding that even after 30 years in the industry, he does not believe he has mastered filmmaking completely.

Jyothika supported Suriya during Karuppu’s financial challenges

Suriya also opened up about the financial hurdles faced during Karuppu, revealing that the project required additional funding at the final stage.

He thanked Jyothika for standing by him during the difficult period. According to Suriya, taking extra loans was a major decision, but Jyothika trusted both him and the film completely. He acknowledged that if anything had gone wrong, the consequences would have affected their entire family.

Responding to his appreciation, Jyothika humbly dismissed the praise. She said they have always made important decisions together, whether in parenting or professional life, and credited Suriya’s determination and generosity for ensuring the film reached audiences successfully.

Suriya47 and Rolex updates

Sharing an update on his upcoming films, Suriya confirmed that his next project with Aavesham director Jithu Madhavan has been completed under their home banner. The film, currently referred to as Suriya47, is expected to hit theatres by the end of the year.

On Rolex, Suriya said he has no clarity about when the much-awaited project will happen. He noted that director Lokesh Kanagaraj is currently occupied with multiple commitments, including his film with Allu Arjun and Vikram 2. However, since Lokesh continues to mention Rolex in interviews, Suriya remains hopeful that the project will materialise when the timing is right.
