Sarpatta Parambarai Round 2, the much-awaited follow-up to Pa Ranjith’s 2021 boxing drama, has officially commenced production. Actor Arya, who played the lead role in the first film, has confirmed his return to the franchise.
The film was announced in April 2023, but updates about the project remained limited for a long time. Pa Ranjith is returning as the director after completing Vettuvam, which is currently gearing up for its release in December. Arya took to his official X handle to announce that the shooting for Sarpatta Parambarai Round 2 has now begun, sharing a poster featuring a boxing ring.
Interestingly, the new film is expected to be a prequel to Sarpatta Parambarai, although the makers had earlier kept its timeline under wraps. Pa Ranjith had previously revealed that the film would explore an interesting period and was planned as a political drama. At the same time, he had promised to retain elements that audiences connected with in the first film, including boxing and the characters.
The first installment, Sarpatta Parambarai, was set in North Chennai and revolved around the rivalry between the Idiyappa Parambarai and Sarpatta Parambarai boxing clans. The period sports drama explored the region’s boxing culture and its politics. It premiered directly on Prime Video in 2021 due to the restrictions on theatrical releases during the COVID-19 pandemic and went on to receive strong critical and audience appreciation.
More details about the returning cast, the story and the technical team of Sarpatta Parambarai Round 2 are yet to be announced. However, Arya’s return to the franchise has now been confirmed, while the new film is set to revisit the world of boxing created by Pa Ranjith in the first installment.
