Pa. Ranjith spills the beans on Rajinikanth’s Kaala

Director Pa. Ranjith’s interview with Tamil magazine Vikatan where he spills the beans about the movie has left the fans excited.

  • Kaala is the story of an emotional patriarch. His family, four sons, grandchildren, love, old friends and more. Rajini sir said he never expected a story like this when I narrated the story to him.
  • Rajinikanth’s character name in the film is Karikaalan. Kaala is the short form of Kaalan from his name. Kaala means black, which denotes the working community. Kaala is also one of the deities being worshipped in Tirunelveli district. His character hails from Tirunelveli, a Nellai Tamil speaking role and hence the title sounded apt to me. We have also used black as an important metaphor in the film.
  • Kaala is not about any real-life person. It’s also not a story about an individual. The film talks about the livelihood of a society. Dharavi is a multi-cultural, multi-linguistic slum which brims with diversity. Droves of Tirunelveli Tamils live there. I wrote the script keeping in mind the diversity of Dharavi. In fact, the inspiration for the film’s titular character was my grandfather.

The movie produced by Lyca Productions is gearing up to hit screens on April 27th worldwide. The album composed by Santhosh Narayanan is expected to be launched soon.
