Mari Selvaraj calls working with Ilaiyaraaja in Manjanathi a dream come true

The filmmaker says collaborating with the legendary composer is a deeply personal milestone he had always wished for.

Director Mari Selvaraj has opened up about his much-awaited collaboration with legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja in his upcoming film Manjanathi, describing the opportunity as a “dream come true.” The filmmaker officially announced the project recently, marking the first-ever collaboration between the acclaimed director and the iconic music maestro.

The announcement was made through a special video that featured Mari Selvaraj visiting Ilaiyaraaja’s residence, where the veteran composer was seen creating music for the film. The glimpse also included excerpts from an older interview in which Mari had spoken about his admiration for Ilaiyaraaja and his long-standing wish to work with him someday.

In the clip, Mari Selvaraj described Ilaiyaraaja as someone deeply connected to his life and childhood memories. The filmmaker revealed that he had always dreamt of collaborating with the composer but felt he needed to become more mature as a filmmaker before approaching him. He also reportedly believed that he required a story worthy enough to be backed by Ilaiyaraaja’s music.

The announcement video concludes with Mari Selvaraj expressing what the collaboration means to him personally. Sharing his excitement, the filmmaker wrote that he was beginning to sketch his life alongside Ilaiyaraaja and described the collaboration as the “symphony” of his heart. The emotional message quickly resonated with fans and film lovers across social media.

Manjanathi marks Mari Selvaraj’s sixth directorial venture after films such as Pariyerum Perumal, Karnan, Maamannan, Vaazhai, and Bison Kaalamaadan. While the makers are yet to reveal complete details about the storyline, reports suggest that the film could be connected to the world of Vaazhai and may explore the later stages of Sivanaindhan’s life. However, an official confirmation regarding the plot remains awaited.

The project is backed by Navvi Studios and Fortune Entertainment. Meanwhile, actors Kayadu Lohar and Priyanka Mohan have also been confirmed as part of the cast, adding further excitement around the film. With Mari Selvaraj’s storytelling and Ilaiyaraaja’s music finally coming together, Manjanathi has already emerged as one of the most anticipated Tamil projects currently in development.
