Maalai Nerathu Mayakam a modern love story with good presentation that keeps us engaged till the end, being a fair start to the year. A typical Selva script which is well managed by Gitanjali. It is indeed tough to manage these plots unless you are very confident on your work. Maalai Nerathu Mayakam has a less populated cast and pulls some true intentions of the new generation couple. The plot is simple. A drama that is uploaded with a delicate conversation of love and lust, with the maker insisting that love is not lust and it is just tangled in such a form.

Balakrishna Kola as Prabhu has led the script from front as a typical modulated hero for the film, a well justified character portrayed as a techie with zero knowledge of pub culture, who waits for the right age to show his love to his better half. Wamiqa is a no less, and has plenty of scope for her acting skills, she just scored with her attitude and effortless expressions portraying herself as a party freak adjusted to her limits. Both get married on unavoidable circumstances and there seems to be no match for their culture, thereby moving away with the passing day starting. Balakrishna who madly falls in love with his wife struggles to express what he really thinks and tries all the possible way to care for her. But Wamiqa avoids him with ego and anger, the fight splits them little by little and when he forces her they virtually stand on legal notice for divorce ending the first half.

Into the the second half, Wamiqa and family get into financial trouble after losing her father, works hard enough to fulfil their living cycle, also declining lot of offers thinking about the days spent with her husband. Wamiqa decides to go on with her ex boy-friend just to forget her married life and he plans a trip to Munnar.  Bala follows them with his friend Parvathy Nair deciding to revenge Wamiqa, but turns to pave way to her possessiveness bringing her close. What happens between the duo from hereon forms the end of the film, with a matured conversation between Wamiqa and Bala explaining that it takes time to exchange emotions and that is love and life is full of instincts and circumstances.

The supporting casts are minor with nice impacts on the script, be it Azhagam Perumal as Bala’s father and Kalyani Natarajan as Wamiqa’s mother, both are top notch. The technical part of the movie is strong enough to support Selva’s script and Gitanjali’s experiments, with the feel good songs and BGM by Amrit keeping the emotions alive. Good shots with the lens by Cinematographer Sridhar, a timely favor by editor Rukesh on the run-time not enforcing the play to be cinematic.

Overall Maalai Nerathu Mayakam is a warm gesture to the couple of this era and justifies that lust never overtakes love.
