Producer KVN Venkat Narayana has reflected on the journey of Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, describing the film’s release as one of the most challenging phases of his career. Speaking after the film’s theatrical release, he discussed the production’s struggles, Vijay’s constant support and also shared updates about Yash’s Toxic.
‘Making Jana Nayagan was easier than releasing it’
According to Venkat Narayana, completing the film was not the difficult part. Instead, coordinating its worldwide release proved to be the biggest challenge.
He revealed that the team had to work against time to bring distributors and exhibitors together across multiple territories. With several major releases competing for screens, securing a suitable release date became a demanding task.
The producer also pointed to the unexpected delay caused by the CBFC certification. The team had initially expected a U/A certificate but eventually received an A certificate, leaving very little time for marketing and release planning.
Adding to the challenges, Jana Nayagan also suffered a piracy leak before its theatrical release.
Despite these setbacks, Venkat Narayana said the film has received an overwhelming response from audiences. He noted that the film released during a non-holiday period and believes the box office performance could have been even bigger had it arrived during Pongal or the summer holiday season.
Credits Vijay’s stardom and audience connection
Venkat Narayana credited much of the film’s success to Thalapathy Vijay’s unmatched popularity and emotional bond with audiences.
He described Vijay as the industry’s biggest crowd-puller, saying fans continue to celebrate every release as a theatrical festival. According to him, Vijay’s screen presence and connection with moviegoers played a vital role in attracting audiences despite the release challenges.
How Jana Nayagan came together
The producer also recalled how the project was initiated.
He revealed that he initially explored the possibility of producing a film featuring Vijay and Lokesh Kanagaraj. However, after the success of Vikram, Lokesh moved on to direct Leo.
Later, actor-manager Jagadish arranged a meeting with Vijay, where the actor discussed a story idea inspired by portions of Bhagavanth Kesari. Vijay then suggested H. Vinoth as the director for the project.
Venkat Narayana added that Vijay had already informed him that the film would be his final project before entering politics, and the team expected a few hurdles. However, they never anticipated the certification issue that eventually delayed the release.
‘The movie is my priority,’ Vijay assured
One of the most difficult moments during production came when the film was leaked online before its release.
Venkat Narayana admitted he was hesitant to inform Vijay about the incident. However, the actor immediately reassured him by saying that the film remained his priority.
The producer said Vijay personally stood beside the team throughout the release process, helping them address every challenge. He added that having a star of Vijay’s stature fully involved gave the team confidence to overcome every obstacle.
He also revealed that the makers changed the film’s title card to ‘CM Vijay’ based on audience demand after the release. Venkat Narayana further praised Vijay’s humility, saying the actor remains simple, approachable and deeply connected with people despite his immense stardom.
Venkat Narayana on Yash’s Toxic
Speaking about Yash’s Toxic, Venkat Narayana said the actor shares a special bond with him and has been actively involved in the project from the beginning.
He explained that discussions about their collaboration started soon after KGF: Chapter 2. According to the producer, Yash wanted to create something that would push creative boundaries and establish a new benchmark for Indian cinema.
Directed by Geethu Mohandas, Toxic is described as much more than a conventional gangster film. Venkat Narayana said the film combines large-scale visuals with emotional storytelling and several first-of-their-kind cinematic moments.
Why Toxic’s release date changed
Venkat Narayana also explained why the makers decided to postpone Toxic.
He said the Middle East is one of the film’s biggest overseas markets. When tensions escalated due to the regional conflict, the team became concerned about its impact on theatrical business.
With audiences in several regions focused on the evolving situation, including many families in India with relatives living in the Middle East, the makers decided that shifting the release date would be the most practical decision.
Expressing complete confidence in the project, Venkat Narayana said Yash’s dedication, vision and involvement in every stage of production would help Toxic set a new benchmark. He concluded by describing the film as “a fairy tale for grown-ups” which is set to hit screens worldwide from August 26th.
