Kodi is a perfect festival outing from Dhanush, who has enough moments to score as a performer in his first dual role on screen. Also, after a slew of box office duds, Kodi looks like a guaranteed comeback for Dhanush at the box office.

Durai Senthil Kumar has taken a usual story-line and succeeded in creating unlikeliest situations in the screenplay, which keeps the pack ticking with genuinely surprising twists and turns. Despite the formulaic premise, the wholesome character arcs are what make the film enjoyable.

The story majorly revolves around twin brothers (both played by Dhanush) – a timid Anbu and a daring, ambitious Kodi –  and an aspiring, ruthless politician Rudhra (Trisha), who would go to any extent to fulfill her dreams. However, there arises a situation when Kodi and Rudhra, who are in a relationship, contest each other for an assembly seat in their constituency. That becomes an ideal ploy for Durai Senthil Kumar to play around the screenplay.

Durai has smartly picked his supporting roles, who have done justice to their respective characters. Trisha has a solidly written role and that’s the only factor which rescues her middling performance and bad lip sync. Dhanush shines in his role as Kodi, which is packed with enough celebratory moments with subtle punch dialogues that actually work. SA Chandrasekhar’s role too doesn’t pack a punch and appears to be a bad choice.

Santhosh Narayanan’s background score is lovely and accentuates the mood of the film at crucial junctures. Venkatesh’s camera has superbly captured the outdoor locations of Pollachi, where the film is entirely set against.

Overall, Kodi is an enjoyable commercial film from Durai Senthil Kumar, who is beginning to master the mainstream genre with a touch of realism.
