Director-actor RJ Balaji has shared key insights into the making of Karuppu, revealing how the ambitious project came together and evolved into a full-fledged commercial entertainer headlined by Suriya.
RJB recalled that the film materialized at a time when he was working on a different idea. A call from Dream Warrior Pictures changed the course of events, and he described the moment as almost divine. Soon after, he met Suriya and narrated the story, which immediately struck a chord with the actor. Following a detailed script discussion, Suriya clarified a few aspects before placing complete trust in the filmmaker’s vision.
Positioning Karuppu as a festival-friendly entertainer, RJ Balaji emphasized that the film is designed as a wholesome theatrical experience for families. He noted that crafting a film for a star of Suriya’s stature requires a balance of elements: emotion, romance, action, and celebratory moments – ensuring it appeals to a wide audience base. Drawing from his own admiration for Suriya, RJB revealed that he developed the script from a fan’s perspective, shaping the character and narrative to align with how he envisioned the star on screen.
At its core, Karuppu carries a larger-than-life premise. The story imagines a world grappling with hardship, where a powerful figure rises like a superhero to overcome adversity, defeat evil, and restore balance. RJB stated that the film presents this journey in a mass-driven, action-packed format while retaining a meaningful emotional undercurrent.
Speaking about Suriya’s performance, RJB was full of praise, highlighting the actor’s commanding screen presence. He remarked that even in crowded frames, Suriya naturally stands out, underlining his star power and charisma.
The film also marks a significant reunion, with Trisha starring opposite Suriya after more than two decades since Aaru. RJB shared that he had long intended to collaborate with Trisha and believed she was the right fit for the role. Upon hearing the narration, she connected strongly with her character and the film’s structure, leading to her inclusion in the project.
RJB further reflected on his understanding of mainstream cinema, recalling his interactions with Thalapathy Vijay during earlier story discussions. He noted that large-scale films demand key commercial elements such as songs and dance numbers. In Karuppu, Suriya features in two high-energy dance sequences designed to elevate the theatrical experience.
On the musical front, RJ Balaji revealed that AR Rahman had initially shown interest in the project but stepped away due to personal constraints. The team then brought in composer Sai Abhyankar, whose fresh and contemporary sound impressed the director. RJB expressed confidence in backing new talent, drawing parallels with the rise of composers like Harris Jayaraj and Anirudh Ravichander. Today, Sai Abhyankar’s work on the film is gaining significant attention.
Adding to the film’s musical buzz, the third single, “Raathu Raasan,” was unveiled on the occasion of Tamil New Year. Set against a vibrant temple backdrop, the song features energetic visuals of villagers celebrating with traditional fervor, with Suriya fully immersing himself in the festive atmosphere. The track, composed by Sai Abhyankar and sung by him alongside VM Mahalingam and Paal Dabba, with lyrics by Vivek, has further heightened anticipation.
With its blend of mass appeal, emotional depth, and high-energy elements, Karuppu is gearing up for a worldwide theatrical release on May 14th, promising a complete cinematic experience for audiences.
