The buzz is back on for Karuppu, the much-anticipated new film starring Suriya, and whispers are now pointing firmly toward a January release. With the festival of Pongal on the calendar, hopes of a Pongal release look increasingly marginal. Two major films: Jana Nayagan and Parasakthi, have already locked in their slots, and if a third biggie like Karuppu enters the mix, box-office pie and screen sharing could become fiercely competitive for all three.
As such, the makers of Karuppu appear to be looking slightly beyond Pongal, setting their sights on the end of January for a grand release. The film is reportedly shaping up to be a full blown festive entertainer – a “cracker” of a film that deserves a fitting date and marketing push. Director RJ Balaji recently revealed at an award event that the film’s release is now slated for next year, citing delays in the visual-effects/CG work as a reason.
In tandem with the release date chatter, the first single from the film “God Mode” dropped on Diwali. The track, composed and sung by Sai Abhyankar (with vocals by Gana Muthu and lyrics by Vishnu Edavan), fuses intense rhythm, folk-inflected beats and modern electronic textures to introduce Suriya’s character, Saravanan – a lawyer by day, seemingly a mythic force by night.
With the first musical offering already turning heads and the team hinting at a January window, all eyes are on the next formal announcement. If Karuppu manages to secure the end-January slot, it could steer clear of the crowded Pongal rush and enjoy a strong solo run. Until then, the countdown is on, let’s wait and watch how the makers steer this high-voltage entertainer to its ideal landing date.
