Karthi and Nalan Kumarasamy bring back the mass era with Vaa Vaathiyaar

Karthi returns in a massy new avatar as a quirky cop in Nalan Kumarasamy’s nostalgic action drama set for December 5th release.

Karthi’s much awaited 27th film, Vaa Vaathiyaar, directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, is all set to hit theatres on December 5th. The film marks a fresh collaboration between the actor and the Soodhu Kavvum filmmaker, with early buzz suggesting a blend of nostalgia, mass appeal, and signature quirk.

Director Nalan Kumarasamy has described the film as a throwback to the classic action-masala films of the ’80s and ’90s. The story revolves around Ramu, a lively and carefree police officer played by Karthi, whose life takes a dramatic turn when his grandfather’s safety is threatened. An emotional core is added through the grandfather’s belief that Ramu shares a spiritual connection with the late MGR, which adds layers of legacy and expectation to the character’s arc.

Karthi, speaking about the film, praised Nalan’s ability to craft something commercially engaging while staying true to his offbeat style. He revealed that what was on paper looked completely different once Nalan brought it to life on screen. He also admitted that portraying a character with MGR-inspired traits carried an added sense of responsibility.

The film features an impressive ensemble cast including Krithi Shetty, Sathyaraj, Rajkiran, Anandaraj, Shilpa Manjunath, Karunakaran, GM Sundar, Vadivukarasi, and Madhur Mittal. With music by Santhosh Narayanan, cinematography by George C. Williams, and editing by Vetri Krishnan, Vaa Vaathiyaar boasts a strong technical lineup.

On the sidelines, Karthi also shared updates on Sardar 2, the sequel to his hit spy thriller. Directed again by PS Mithran, the sequel features SJ Suryah in a pivotal role. According to Karthi, Sardar 2 will raise the stakes significantly and tackle more complex, timely themes, offering a grander scale than its predecessor.

With Vaa Vaathiyaar releasing in December and Sardar 2 on the horizon, Karthi is clearly gearing up for an exciting slate that balances both mass appeal and layered storytelling.
