The Supreme Court on Monday criticized the Karnataka High Court for suggesting that actor Kamal Haasan apologize over alleged objections to his upcoming film Thug Life. The apex court questioned the legal basis for such a remark, calling it inappropriate and concerning for artistic freedom.
The High Court had admitted a petition seeking a ban on the film, citing potential public disorder due to its title and promotional material. During the hearing, it reportedly remarked that Kamal Haasan should consider apologizing – a suggestion the Supreme Court found troubling.
“A court cannot casually suggest an apology without legal justification. It has serious implications for free speech,” the bench said.
The Supreme Court’s sharp response underscores the importance of upholding creative expression and due process. Further hearings are expected in the coming weeks.
