Jana Nayagan Supreme Court move likely after High Court stays censor order

The Madras High Court Division Bench stays the single judge’s censor order, prompting the Jana Nayagan team to approach the Supreme Court as release plans face fresh uncertainty.

The Jana Nayagan Supreme Court development has emerged as the latest twist in the film’s ongoing certification battle. Just hours after the makers and Thalapathy Vijay’s fans breathed a sigh of relief, the Madras High Court’s Chief Justice-led Division Bench stayed the earlier single judge’s order that directed the CBFC to grant the film a UA 16+ certificate.

The development comes after the CBFC filed a writ appeal challenging the single judge’s directive. Taking up the appeal, the Division Bench questioned the manner in which the earlier order was passed. During the hearing, the Honourable Chief Justice reportedly observed that the single judge had directed the CBFC to produce records and issue orders without granting adequate time for the board to file a counter affidavit. Citing procedural concerns, the bench implemented an interim stay on the single judge’s verdict.

The Division Bench has now scheduled the CBFC’s writ appeal for further hearing on January 21st, effectively halting the certification process for the time being. In response, the legal team representing KVN Productions urged the court to upload the Division Bench’s order copy at the earliest. This, they stated, would allow them to approach the Supreme Court on Monday, January 12th, seeking urgent relief and clarity on the matter.

With the latest legal twist, the release prospects of Jana Nayagan have once again turned uncertain. The film’s planned release during the Pongal festival window now appears unlikely. Industry sources suggest that the makers may instead explore a Republic Day weekend release, depending on how quickly legal relief is secured.

As proceedings continue, fans and the industry alike await further developments in what has become a closely watched legal battle surrounding one of the year’s most anticipated films.
