Jana Nayagan censor certificate issue resolved after Madras High Court verdict
Relief for Thalapathy Vijay’s fans as the Madras High Court directs the CBFC to issue the censor certificate, clearing a major hurdle ahead of Jana Nayagan’s release.

The long-standing Jana Nayagan censor certificate issue has finally been resolved, bringing significant relief to the film’s makers and Thalapathy Vijay’s fans. Following arguments heard from both parties on Wednesday, January 7th, the Madras High Court delivered its verdict, directing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to grant the film a UA censor certificate and dismissing the plea to refer it to a revising committee.
The judgement, delivered by Honourable Justice Asha, marks a crucial turning point for the highly anticipated project, which had faced an unexpected release hurdle despite massive pre-release momentum.
With the court ruling now in place, the censor certification for Jana Nayagan stands officially confirmed. The film has reportedly been approved with a runtime of approximately 3 hours, 3 minutes, and 43 seconds, further heightening anticipation around what is widely regarded as one of the most emotionally significant films in Thalapathy Vijay’s career.
However, clarity is still awaited on whether the CBFC will move the matter to a Division Bench or allow the process to conclude here. If no further legal steps are taken, the makers are expected to announce the film’s release date shortly.
Jana Nayagan was initially scheduled to release worldwide today. Advance bookings had opened at select locations and witnessed an overwhelming response, with tickets selling out within minutes. Following the last-minute cancellation of shows, ticketing platforms initiated refunds and are currently awaiting official communication from the production team regarding the revised release plan. Notably, opening weekend pre-sales are reported to have crossed 65 crore globally, despite opening in limited screens.
The film’s trailer, released six days ago, continues to dominate digital platforms, trending at the top while amassing over 43 million views, underlining the extraordinary pre-release buzz surrounding the project.
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan carries added significance as it marks Thalapathy Vijay’s farewell film before his transition into public life. Expectations remain sky-high, fueled by the film’s political and emotional undertones – an area Vinoth is well known for handling with restraint and impact.
Music for the film is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, with four songs already released and warmly received. Attention now shifts to the background score, expected to play a key role in the film’s dramatic narrative.
The film also features a powerful ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Priyamani, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Revathy, Nasser, and Narain, adding depth and pan-Indian appeal.
Finally, a sigh of relief for the Jana Nayagan team and Thalapathy Vijay’s fans, as the Madras High Court verdict directs the CBFC to issue the censor certificate, effectively resolving the long-running Jana Nayagan censor certificate issue and paving the way for the film’s much awaited release.
