Suriya’s awaited 45th film, Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji, has garnered significant buzz among fans, especially as it marks the actor’s return to a rustic, rural role – a look that audiences have been eager to see him embrace again.
Initially targeted as Diwali release, the film is now said to take a push. According to reports from Hindu Tamil, few portions of the film are yet to be shot, and the post-production process is still underway. With the timeline too tight to meet the festive season deadline, the makers have opted to delay the release to avoid compromising on quality.
In the meantime, discussions are ongoing with major players in the digital and television space for the film’s distribution rights. However, sources suggest that the current year’s OTT and satellite slots are already filled, reducing the chances of a late-2025 premiere. All signs now point to a potential Pongal 2026 release window.
Interestingly, Karuppu may find itself in a high voltage box office clash, as Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan has already locked in the Pongal weekend for its release (Jan 9th). If both films stick to this timeline, it would mark a major showdown between two Tamil cinema heavyweights, a face-off fans haven’t witnessed in years. Also, Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi, directed by Sudha Kongara also eyeing for Pongal release, but is said to hit the screens after few days after Jana Nayagan hits.
Karuppu, directed and co-written by RJ Balaji, Karuppu boasts a star studded ensemble with Trisha, Shivada, Anagha Maya Ravi, Indrans, and Natty in pivotal roles. The visual storytelling is helmed by acclaimed cinematographer GK Vishnu, while music composer Sai Abhayankkar is on board to deliver the film’s soundtrack.
