A sublime, interesting thriller.

Irumbu Thirai slams a worthy thought into our heads on how vulnerable we are to digital danger - explaining the cons in an accessible format. PS Mithran looks like a director who could crack a deal with big actors soon, he proves that he's here to stay with the amount of confidence and conviction that he displays with the film.

Director PS Mithran makes a fine debut as a director with Irumbu Thirai, a clever cyber-crime thriller that works majorly due to it’s taut writing, presentation and the performance of the lead proto-anto in Vishal and Arjun. The film has a rather formulaic but precise first half but then turns into a sublime thriller in the second.

Instead of going too deep into the detail and boring the audience, Mithran projects the crying issues of a common man in a tough situation, and bends his story on the central characters alone. After the interesting character establishment part in the first half, situations transform into a data-packed mind-game that has it’s action coming in at regular intervals. Despite the length of close to 3 hours, the film doesn’t lag and keeps throwing surprises at you, which make it special.

It’s probably one of Vishal’s best commercial films in his career, and the actor gives it what it needs in terms of his performance and the action which he is known for. Standing on the other side with an equal weightage is Arjun, who comes in only halfway but has loads of style and a thick villainy snare that gives the film an extra edge. Together, both of them form a solid prota-anta duo that is something to remember for a while. Samantha, being the only main woman character in the film, has a couple of worthy scenes as Vishal’s driving force. At the same time, veteran Delhi Ganesh’s emotional scenes with Vishal add a lot of family factor to the film.

George C Williams once again proves his mettle with splendid camera work, where the color tones also work in shade of the characters in it. Musically, Irumbu Thirai is easily Yuvan Shankar Raja’s best work in terms of his re-recording, with almost every cue making a mark.

Toting up, Irumbu Thirai slams a worthy thought into our heads on how vulnerable we are to digital danger – explaining the cons in an accessible format. PS Mithran looks like a director who could crack a deal with big actors soon, he proves that he’s here to stay with the amount of confidence and conviction that he displays with the film.
