An intricate, tidy thriller.

Iru Mugan is a decently entertaining fare and has all the elements that have to be in a commercial flick. Vikram's rocking performance is the biggest turnover here, with a lot of facts revealed on how science could be a threat to the society. Despite the lags, it makes for a good weekend watch.

A clear science plot mixed with action makes in for Iru Mugan, offering a commercial stage for Vikram with enough room for performance. Anand Shankar has used the opportunity well in his sophomore outing, making full use of Vikram’s versatility.

In his first ever dual role, Vikram brings out yet another unearthed talent of his to the frame, resulting in a terrific performance all round. Seen in two contrasting roles, he rules the roost as the RAW agent Akilan and the villain Love. When Love causes trouble by pulling up a drug called ‘speed’ which enhances the adrenaline of a person, he’ll breaks loose as people start getting affected. What happens when Akilan comes into the picture and what is his connection with Love and his wife Meera is what Iru Mugan is all about.

The first half moves at a good pace with interesting knots which get unveiled at the right places. Except for bad songs placements, there is nothing much to complain about. The interval block is probably the best moment in the film, and does give you a dash of thrill. Into the second half, Anand Shankar concentrates more on the villain character of Akilan but the predictable proceedings and the lack of strong screenplay do affect the flow.

Nayanthara comes in to perform some proper scenes, fitting the bill of an action heroine well. Nitya Menon in a small role, is adequate. Thambi Ramaih becomes responsible to provide the occasional laughs in an otherwise serious thriller.

Overall, Iru Mugan is a decently entertaining fare and has all the elements that have to be in a commercial flick. Vikram’s rocking performance is the biggest turnover here, with a lot of facts revealed on how science could be a threat to the society. Anand Shankar’s smart script needed more bulk and thrill, but what’s come finally isn’t something that can be dashed away. Despite the lags, it makes for a good weekend watch.
