H Vinoth Jana Nayagan Interview: ‘It’s not just a commercial film, it speaks about politics’

The director reveals that Jana Nayagan explores democracy and unity while urging audiences to experience the theatrical version despite the widely circulated leaked copy.

With Jana Nayagan set for its theatrical release, director H Vinoth has shared fresh insights about the film in his interview with Cinema Vikatan. He spoke about the leaked version, the censor process, Vijay’s support and the film’s political message.

According to Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is not just a commercial entertainer. Instead, he believes the film carries a meaningful political message that deserves discussion.

No major changes after the leak

Vinoth clarified that the theatrical version closely matches the version submitted for censorship. The Censor Board instructed the team not to alter the story or its core message. Therefore, the makers avoided making any major changes.

However, he added that audiences will still notice several fresh moments in theatres. Certain portions that were missing or altered in the leaked version are now part of the final release.

A film that speaks about politics

The director requested audiences not to treat Jana Nayagan as a film that simply celebrates Vijay or his political party. Instead, he described it as a story that explores sensitive political ideas.

He hopes the film will encourage meaningful discussions among viewers. Therefore, he urged everyone, including those who watched the leaked version, to support the theatrical release.

The battle to protect democracy

Vinoth revealed that the film revolves around the fight to protect democracy. According to him, the villain wants to destroy democratic values and establish authoritarian rule.

On the other hand, Vijay’s character stands against that ideology. His mission is to protect the nation, safeguard democracy and prevent the misuse of power.

A larger conflict than before

The filmmaker explained that the central conflict is much bigger than his previous films. He said the antagonist is driven by power and greed. These ideas form the foundation of the story.

At the same time, Vinoth called Jana Nayagan “200% a Vijay film.” However, he added that audiences will also recognize his own storytelling style throughout the narrative.

Pay attention to the final hour

Vinoth believes the last hour is the film’s biggest strength. In particular, he highlighted the final 30 minutes as the most important portion.

According to him, viewers who watch these scenes carefully will discover several political and social layers. He even suggested that the ideas presented in the climax would remain relevant long after the film ends.

An earlier political script for Vijay

The director also revealed an interesting detail about his collaboration with Vijay. Before directing Nerkonda Paarvai, he had already narrated a political story to the actor.

Although Vijay appreciated the first half, the second half did not fully convince him. As a result, the project was shelved. Years later, the duo reunited for Jana Nayagan.

Disappointed with the ‘A’ certificate

Vinoth admitted that the team wanted a U/A certificate. However, the Censor Board eventually awarded the film an ‘A’ certificate.

He said both Vijay and the producers were disappointed because children have always been an important part of Vijay’s audience. Even so, the team respected the Board’s decision and accepted the certification.

Vijay’s support impressed Vinoth

The director also praised Vijay for standing by the team during difficult situations. Whether it was the leak or the certification issue, Vijay reportedly contacted the team and reassured everyone.

According to Vinoth, Vijay always encouraged them to remain calm and positive. He added that these qualities explain why the actor continues to enjoy immense public support.

More than a box office film

Finally, Vinoth described Jana Nayagan as a unique project. He said the film cannot be judged only through its box office numbers because it has faced several unprecedented challenges before release.

He also appealed to audiences not to allow hatred or political differences to influence their opinion of the film. Instead, he urged everyone to watch it with an open mind and appreciate its message of unity and democracy.

Jana Nayagan is gearing up for a grand worldwide release on July 23, and advance bookings continue to soar. The film has grossed close to 25 crore in worldwide pre-sales, delivering phenomenal numbers across India and overseas. Remarkably, this response has been driven by the unmatched stardom of Thalapathy Vijay aka Honorable CM of Tamilnadu. Despite an easily accessible leaked HD version that is reportedly said to have been viewed by over a crore people, the film continues to witness extraordinary demand worldwide, once again highlighting Vijay’s unparalleled box-office pull.
