A fair entertainer that drives home some important messages.

Harish Kalyan’s films so far have seen him play vulnerable or soft spoken characters, but for a change, the actor has moved out of what he has been doing so far and has started off into the commercial zone for a edutaining film in Diesel, which matches the worries of the fishermen folk who struggle when pipelines cut through their land, while also matching through the different problems in the world of crude oil.

The film explains the problems first up and then takes us into the entertaining side of the character of Vasu, played by Harish himself, who takes up the role of a young chap who leads through the crude oil snatching circuit. The film has a truckload of characters who all come in with different reasons, and establishes the first half registering their faces while also having lighter moments in the form of the love track with Athulya, who does a fine job. The second half is about the problems that they face, and how Vasu uses his brain and brawn to get back into the game, solve his friendly and familial problems, and also his tussles with the police force and the governmental game.

Diesel has a very interesting plot that could have been converted into an entertaining film that also carries a message, but director Shanmugam Muthusamy chooses a very dry route that affects the flow of the film and limits its levels. The film has a lot to carry on its shoulders and there’s too much weightlifting to do for Harish amidst the plethora of characters, which in turn pulls down the overall effect. However, it manages to throw in some interesting details related to real life incidents, which salvage the proceedings.

The music by Dhibu Ninan Thomas is a major highlight with all the songs working out, and he does a fine job with the BGM as well. But otherwise, the film is not technically favorable and feels dated at places.

On the whole, Diesel is a watchable entertainer with a very good and earnest performance by Harish Kalyan.

Diesel Movie Rating: 3/5
