Deepika Padukone walks away from ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ sequel; makers confirm departure
Deepika Padukone exits Kalki 2898 AD sequel, leaving a major void and sparking speculation about her potential replacement.

In a surprising development, Deepika Padukone will not be returning for the sequel of Kalki 2898 AD. The film’s makers took to social media to announce the departure, stating, “After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. A film like Kalki 2898 AD deserves that commitment and much more.” While the tone remained respectful, the decision marks a significant change for the much-anticipated follow up.
Deepika played a central role in the first installment, bringing emotional depth and star power to the high concept sci-fi epic. Her performance was widely appreciated and integral to the film’s narrative. With her exit, speculation has intensified around who might step into the sequel to match her presence and impact.
Meanwhile, the sequel itself is actively in development. Director Nag Ashwin has confirmed that shooting is expected to begin in December 2025, with a targeted release by the end of 2026. The sequel will focus more heavily on Prabhas’ character, Bhairava (also Karna), and expand the arc of Ashwatthama, played by Amitabh Bachchan. The film promises to build on the rich mythological-futuristic world introduced in the first part, and now with a major casting change, the anticipation is only set to grow.
