A grounded supernatural thriller

Dark chooses a different path from the usual Tamil horror entertainers. Instead of depending on comedy, romance or exaggerated commercial elements, the film remains committed to its psychological horror premise. Director Kalyan Jegan focuses on building suspense through storytelling and atmosphere. As a result, the film offers an engaging experience for viewers who enjoy slow-burning supernatural thrillers.

The story follows an atheist whose life changes after he moves into a house with a disturbing past. Soon, unexplained incidents begin to shake his rational beliefs, while a shocking crime pushes him into a terrifying journey. The screenplay gradually unfolds the mystery without revealing too much too early. Although the pacing slows down in a few places, it maintains enough curiosity to keep the audience invested until the climax.

One of the film’s biggest strengths is its technical presentation. Since much of the story unfolds inside a single house, the setting itself becomes an important part of the narrative. The cinematography creates an eerie atmosphere, while the background score enhances the tension without becoming overpowering. Similarly, the horror relies more on mood and psychological fear than frequent jump scares, making several moments genuinely effective.

The performances also support the film well. The lead actor convincingly portrays a man whose beliefs are gradually challenged by circumstances beyond his understanding. Meanwhile, the supporting cast delivers natural performances that never distract from the central mystery. DarkĀ also features the late legendary filmmaker and actor K. Bhagyaraj in a notable role, adding emotional significance to the viewing experience. The film also deserves appreciation for staying true to its genre instead of introducing unnecessary commercial compromises.

Overall, Dark is a sincere attempt at delivering a pure psychological horror thriller. While a tighter screenplay could have made the narrative even more gripping, the film succeeds with its focused storytelling, atmospheric presentation and engaging mystery. Consequently, it stands out as a worthwhile watch for audiences looking for a grounded supernatural thriller that prioritizes suspense over spectacle.

Dark Movie Rating: 3/5
