Superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is one of the most anticipated releases in Indian cinema. With a powerhouse ensemble cast including Nagarjuna, Upendra, Aamir Khan, Sathyaraj, Shoubin Shahir and Shruti Haasan, expectations are sky-high. In a recent interview, Lokesh confirmed that the Coolie trailer release date is set for August 2, 2025, much to the excitement of fans.
Lokesh shared some insight into the film’s tone and structure, explaining that Coolie will be a blend of deep emotion and gripping action. “In Coolie, I have tried to elevate the drama. The emotional aspect will be as significant as the action. The first half allows you to sit calmly and absorb the story, while the second half will explode with action – where you’ll witness a different side of Rajinikanth sir,” he said. This balance between storytelling and spectacle is expected to offer audiences something both powerful and refreshing.
The film isn’t just banking on star power for scale, Lokesh clarified. Every actor has been cast with purpose. Aamir Khan, though he appears only briefly, plays a role that leaves a lasting impact. Interestingly, his character was meant to be a surprise element, with the production team going as far as filming his scenes in a separate location. However, Aamir’s honesty made secrecy difficult. “Aamir sir said, ‘I can’t lie in front of a camera.’ I told him to go ahead and say it, I’d handle the production!” Lokesh laughed.
Nagarjuna’s role is perhaps one of the most intriguing in Coolie, as he takes on a negative character – a departure from his typical filmography. Convincing the veteran actor wasn’t easy. Lokesh recalled narrating the script seven to eight times before Nagarjuna agreed. “He’s never done this kind of role in his 40-year career,” the director noted. In contrast, Sathyaraj accepted his part without hesitation, agreeing to join the project immediately after hearing the script.
Shoubin Shahir’s involvement also came with its own story. Lokesh initially wrote the role for another star and spent nearly six months developing the character. He first approached Fahadh Faasil, but scheduling conflicts prevented that collaboration. Eventually, Shoubin came on board and agreed to take on the role.
As the trailer release date nears, the buzz surrounding Coolie continues to intensify. With a strong cast, a fresh narrative structure, and Rajinikanth in what promises to be a transformative role, Coolie is poised to make a major impact when it hits screens.
