Big screen nostalgia: Ajith’s Mankatha and Vijay’s Theri to re-release on same day
Three years after Thunivu and Varisu, Thala and Thalapathy return to theatres together as Mankatha and Theri gear up for a wide re-release.
Tamil cinema has witnessed several memorable box-office showdowns between Ajith Kumar and Vijay, with each clash turning into a celebratory moment for fans. Now, after three years, the iconic rivals are set to share the spotlight once again – this time through the re-release of two of their most celebrated films.
Ajith Kumar’s career defining blockbuster Mankatha is all set to return to theatres on January 23rd, a date that has been eagerly awaited by fans. Around the same time, producer Kalaipuli S Thanu announced plans to re-release Theri, his successful collaboration with Vijay, amid the release-related hurdles surrounding Jana Nayagan. Initially scheduled for a Pongal Day release on January 15th, Theri was later postponed following requests from exhibitors and distributors. The latest confirmation now reveals that both Mankatha and Theri will enjoy a wide theatrical re-release on January 23rd, setting the stage for another Thala–Thalapathy moment at the box office.
Directed by Venkat Prabhu, Mankatha is widely regarded as one of Tamil cinema’s finest heist thrillers, remembered for its stylish narrative, gripping sequences, and Yuvan Shankar Raja’s electrifying soundtrack. On the other hand, Atlee’s Theri stands tall as a mega-hit cop action drama, celebrated for its emotional father-daughter bond and strong family appeal. The film also marked a milestone as GV Prakash’s 50th film as a music composer.
