Anirudh embraces retro vibes for historic KHxRK reunion film

Anirudh says the KH x RK film embraces retro music and playful energy, adding nostalgic flavour to the historic Kamal Haasan-Rajinikanth reunion entertainer on screen.

Music composer Anirudh Ravichander has revealed that he is infusing a vintage musical sensibility into the highly anticipated reunion film KHxRK, headlined by cinema legends Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. The project, which has sparked widespread buzz since the release of its retro-styled promo, aims to blend nostalgic soundscapes with a fun filled cinematic experience.

In a recent conversation, Anirudh described his work on the film as a “special” creative journey. Having previously crafted powerful, mass-driven scores for both Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth in films such as Vikram and Jailer, he and director Nelson Dilipkumar opted to revisit the musical ethos of the 1970s and 1980s for this project. This retro influence, Anirudh explained, is intended to accentuate the stars’ enduring appeal and complement the film’s overall aesthetic.

Anirudh called the experience of collaborating with the two icons “surreal,” especially given that this marks their reunion after nearly five decades. “Just to witness them discussing dialogues and working together felt extraordinary,” he shared, highlighting the unique energy on set as both actors brought their seasoned presence to the production.

Describing KHxRK as a “fun-filled entertainer,” Anirudh expressed excitement about teaming up with both stars and underscored the strength of Nelson’s script. He conveyed confidence that the team’s creative vision will resonate with audiences and deliver a memorable cinematic experience when the film releases.

The project’s announcement promo, which debuted recently and has since ignited fan excitement online, features vintage stylings, period costume details, and a soundtrack that mirrors the film’s throwback mood. Alongside Anirudh and Nelson, the promo includes glimpses of the lead actors in retro wardrobes, evoking both nostalgia and contemporary swagger.

Produced by Red Giant Movies and co-producers Arjun Durai and Shenbaga Moorthy, the film will also feature cinematography by Rajiv Menon, editing by Nirmal, art direction by DRK Kiran, and costume design by Pallavi Singh.

With creative forces blending retro musical styles and iconic talent, KHxRK is shaping up to be one of the most eagerly awaited films in recent Tamil cinema.
