Anbil Avan begins as a warm romantic drama before gradually turning into a thriller with action elements. Directed by R. Karthikeyan, the film follows a young couple who choose to build their life away from their families. Their decision to start a business in a scenic hill station soon puts them in the middle of a dangerous conflict. What begins as a story about love and companionship slowly becomes a fight for survival.

Surya and Iyal fall in love and get married despite not having the support of their families. They decide to start their life together and move to a hill station. The couple purchases a beautiful house with plans to turn it into a homestay. Their peaceful life, however, does not last for long. A local MLA wants to acquire the property and begins creating problems for them. Soon, a group of influential people enters their lives, and the couple finds themselves caught in a much bigger problem.

The first half spends enough time establishing the relationship between Surya and Iyal. This portion works well when it focuses on their everyday life and emotional connection. Their conversations and disagreements give the relationship a natural quality. The hill-station setting also adds freshness to the romantic portions. However, the film takes a little time to reveal its thriller side. Once the conflict around their house becomes clearer, the screenplay begins to move in a more engaging direction.

The second half shifts the film firmly into thriller and action territory. The arrival of the MLA, police officials, a lawyer and other characters increases the tension around the couple. The film also gives Ashok Selvan more scope to move beyond his usual romantic roles. The action portions bring a different energy to the narrative, especially as Surya and Iyal are forced to protect themselves. Some of these sequences work well, although the writing could have created stronger consequences for the violence and conflicts. The emotional confrontation between the lead pair before the climax is one of the better moments in this portion.

Ashok Selvan gives a sincere performance as Surya. He brings a natural quality to the romantic portions and makes the character easy to connect with. His emotional scenes are handled with restraint, while the action sequences show a different side of his performance. Preity Mukundhan is equally effective as Iyal. She brings warmth to the relationship and handles the emotional moments well. The chemistry between the two actors is one of the film’s strengths. Their scenes feel more convincing when the screenplay allows them to simply be a couple dealing with the pressures of life. The supporting actors playing the antagonistic characters also add tension to the second half.

Govind Vasantha’s music is an important asset to the film. The songs complement the romantic portions, while the background score adds energy to the thriller and action sequences. The music works particularly well when the film shifts between its softer and more intense moods. Gautham Rajendran’s cinematography is another positive. The hill-station locations are captured beautifully, and the visuals also help establish the changing atmosphere of the story. Peter Hein’s action choreography gives the film some of its more energetic moments and adds a different dimension to Ashok Selvan’s character.

Anbil Avan works best when it combines the emotional side of its relationship with the suspense surrounding the couple. The shift from romance to thriller gives the film a different identity and allows Ashok Selvan and Preity Mukundhan to explore more demanding situations. The performances, music, cinematography and action sequences add value to the experience. At the same time, the screenplay could have been tighter in places, particularly in the way the conflict develops and reaches its conclusion. Still, the film makes a sincere attempt to blend romance, family emotions, mystery and action. It emerges as a reasonably engaging watch with a few memorable moments.
