Adhe Kangal directed by debutant Rohin Venkatesan is an adequately engaging thriller despite the foreseeable length of proceedings in the second half. This is yet another kind of film that a well-read movie buff can easily associate with a CV Kumar production, who is largely known for churning out minimum guarantee movies with his tactical shrewdness.

Varun (Kalaiarasan), a visually challenged restaurateur, falls in love with Deepa (Sshivada Nair) after impressed with her compassion for elderly roadside orphans who long for food. Meanwhile, Sadhana (Janani Iyer), a journalist and longtime friend of Varun, expresses her intentions to enter into wedlock with Varun to his parents. However, when Varun gets hospitalized for three weeks following an accident, he’s unable to find Deepa. What happens to Deepa and how Varun disentangles the mystery forms the plot.

Director Rohin Venkatesan shows great promise with his fairly good writing, which steers the film in the right direction from the beginning. However, once the stage is set, there’s an inevitable air of predictability, especially in the second half, which hampers the pace of the film.

Sshivada Nair as Deepa does a commendable job. However, Kalaiarasan, who has a large screen-time in the film, could have been expressive and overall does a decent job. Janani Iyer has done justice to her character with her composed portrayal of Sadhana.

Ghibran’s background score and the recurring ‘Thandira’ track are the highlights of the film. He has made a brilliant effort in making us sit through the lifeless romance portions in the first half.

In suspense thrillers, it’s crucial to keep the flow water-tight without veering our attention and editor Leo John Paul, a CV Kumar regular, has succeeded at that. Also, brownie points to Leo for keeping the running time at just two hours. Overall, Director Rohin Venkatesan makes a good debut with his writing and a neat execution.
