Hi Movie Review: Kavin and Nayanthara make this romantic entertainer a pleasant watch

Hi is a refreshing blend of romance, comedy, family drama and emotion. Directed by Vishnu Edavan, the film keeps its storytelling simple and relies on its charming characters, humor and lead pair to create an enjoyable experience.

The story follows Mayilsamy, played by Kavin, a young man who strongly believes in finding love before getting married. After facing several disappointments in love, he continues to search for the right person. Meanwhile, Devayani, played by Nayanthara, wants to escape an arranged marriage and build a life on her own terms.

Their paths cross after both leave home for different reasons. What begins as an unexpected friendship slowly develops into something more. However, Mayilsamy chooses to hide his feelings when Devayani makes it clear that she does not believe in love or marriage.

The situation takes an interesting turn when the two are forced to pretend to be a married couple. Mayilsamy sees an opportunity to win Devayani’s heart, setting the stage for a light-hearted romantic journey filled with comedy, family emotions and several amusing situations.

Kavin is the biggest strength of Hi. His natural expressions, comic timing and Kovai Tamil slang make Mayilsamy instantly likeable. He handles the character’s romantic struggles and emotional moments with maturity. His chemistry with Nayanthara also works well, particularly during their friendship-to-love journey. Nayanthara brings her usual screen presence to Devayani. She looks elegant and handles the emotional portions effectively. Her character gets enough space to contribute to the story, while her combination with Kavin adds charm to the romantic portions.

The supporting cast strengthens the film further. Bhagyaraj gets several enjoyable moments with his dry humor and understated performance. Prabhu brings emotional weight as Nayanthara’s father, while Radhika Sarathkumar adds warmth as Kavin’s mother. Suhasini Maniratnam’s appearance also contributes to one of the film’s more touching emotional moments.

The comedy is another positive. Several supporting characters create fun situations, and the humor mostly remains self-aware rather than becoming overly dramatic. Some jokes land better than others, but the film maintains a pleasant tone throughout.

The family portions become more prominent as the story progresses. While certain emotional stretches could have been shorter, the sentiment works well in important moments. The film also avoids making its family characters overly preachy, which helps maintain its light-hearted nature.

Technically, Hi gets the basics right. Rajesh Shukla’s colourful cinematography gives the film a bright visual appeal, while Jen Martin’s music supports both the romantic and entertaining portions. The songs add energy to the proceedings, and the background score complements the emotional moments effectively.

Vishnu Edavan deserves credit for keeping the narrative accessible. There are no major attempts to complicate a simple love story. Instead, the director focuses on the characters and their relationships. This straightforward approach becomes one of the film’s strengths.

That said, Hi does not offer a story filled with major twists or surprises. Some portions are predictable, and a few emotional scenes could have been trimmed. However, the engaging performances, comedy and warmth of the characters help the film overcome these minor shortcomings.

Overall, Hi is an easy-going romantic entertainer that delivers plenty of laughs, charming moments and genuine emotion. Kavin leads the film with an enjoyable performance, while Nayanthara adds star appeal and emotional depth. If you are looking for a light-hearted love story with family sentiment and comedy, Hi makes for a pleasant theatrical watch.
