Sardar 2: PS Mithran reveals how Karthi’s spy universe expanded into a bigger story
Director PS Mithran opens up about expanding the Sardar universe, Karthi’s challenging multiple roles and SJ Suryah’s immediate decision to play the antagonist.

Director PS Mithran has opened up about the making of Sardar 2, revealing that the sequel was not part of his original plan while working on the first installment. According to the filmmaker, the decision to expand the world of Sardar came only after completing the shooting of the first film.
Mithran explained that he realized the spy world created in Sardar had considerable scope for further exploration. During the promotions of the first film, he happened to travel with Karthi on a flight and narrated the basic plot of the sequel before the flight landed. Karthi reportedly agreed to the idea, following which Mithran developed the story further.
Karthi Continues the Same Character Journey
Speaking about Sardar 2, Mithran highlighted the challenges involved in bringing Karthi back as the same character while presenting different stages of his journey.
The filmmaker noted that Karthi had to portray the aged Sardar, the father and the younger Sardar, making the role particularly demanding. However, Mithran praised the actor’s dedication in handling the multiple variations of the character without making them feel like completely different versions.
PS Mithran on SJ Suryah’s Antagonist
Mithran also revealed an interesting detail about SJ Suryah, who plays the antagonist in Sardar 2. The director explained that he generally develops the villain first because he considers the antagonist to be the strongest foundation of a story.
According to Mithran, SJ Suryah immediately agreed to be part of the film after hearing the narration. The character impressed the actor so much that he did not even raise his usual questions before accepting the role.
Sardar 2 Goes Deeper Into the Spy Universe
While the first Sardar combined an investigation thriller with a strong family drama, Mithran describes Sardar 2 as a much deeper psychological and emotional film.
The filmmaker revealed that he entered the world of Sardar in 2020 and has continued developing it through 2026. He now views the franchise as an entire universe with several possibilities for further storytelling.
Mithran recalled that while shooting the jail sequence for Sardar 2, Karthi’s look gave him the feeling that the character and this world could be explored on a much deeper level.
Even after completing the film, the director felt that there was still considerable scope to explore within the Sardar universe. With its psychological and emotional elements, Sardar 2 is therefore expected to expand the franchise beyond the investigative thriller template established by its predecessor.
Sardar 2 hits screens worldwide on September 10th.
