Vignesh Raja opens up about Kara, working with Dhanush, and Mamitha Baiju’s transformation

Director Vignesh Raja discusses the emotional backdrop of Kara, working with Dhanush, and Mamitha Baiju’s striking role transformation as the film gears up for its April 30 worldwide release.

Director Vignesh Raja, who gained recognition with Por Thozhil, has shared new insights into his upcoming film Kara, describing it as an emotionally intense story set against a turbulent historical backdrop. Speaking in a recent interview with Ananda Vikatan, the filmmaker elaborated on the film’s setting, performances, and his collaboration with actor Dhanush.

According to Vignesh Raja, Kara unfolds in Ramanathapuram during the year 1991, a period marked by the Gulf War between Iraq and the United States. The global conflict led to widespread destruction, including the bombing of oil depots, which triggered massive fires and resulted in a severe shortage of petrol and diesel. Against this socio-political backdrop, the narrative spans sixteen crucial days, following Karasamy, a man forced to confront unresolved aspects of his past while attempting to protect and guide people who place their trust in him during uncertain times. The director describes the film as an emotional journey rooted in survival, responsibility, and human resilience.

Vignesh Raja also spoke extensively about actress Mamitha Baiju, who plays a pivotal role in the film. Known for her appearances in lighter, feel-good films, Mamitha was intentionally cast in a completely contrasting role. The director revealed that he made it clear from the beginning that the character would have no glamour elements. To authentically portray a Ramanathapuram village woman, Mamitha underwent a significant transformation, focusing on realistic makeup, costumes, and body language. He praised her sincerity and emotional depth, adding that audiences will witness a completely new dimension of the actress through her performance.

Reflecting on his collaboration with Dhanush, the filmmaker expressed deep admiration for the actor’s versatility and artistic understanding. Vignesh Raja stated that Dhanush is an actor who can be shaped in countless ways, making him a dream collaborator for any filmmaker. He emphasized that Kara is not a conventional commercial story and required careful storytelling with emotional strength and responsibility. For the director, who is only on his second film, the project holds immense personal and professional significance.

The collaboration began after Dhanush watched Por Thozhil and personally reached out to the director. According to Vignesh Raja, the actor appreciated the film and encouraged him to develop a story for a potential collaboration. After initially sharing a basic idea, the director later returned with a fully developed script, which impressed Dhanush. The actor reportedly engaged deeply with the narration, clarifying doubts and recognizing the uniqueness of the character, ultimately agreeing to take the project forward.

Vignesh Raja further revealed that despite Kara being only his second directorial venture, while marking Dhanush’s 54th film – the actor maintained a collaborative approach. The director had prepared a detailed storyboard outlining every scene visually. After reviewing it, Dhanush encouraged him to focus on creative execution rather than validation, assuring him that they would build the film together through collaboration.

Backed by Vels Film International, Kara is scheduled for a grand worldwide theatrical release on April 30. The makers have begun unveiling character posters under the banner “Faces of Kara,” introducing Mamitha Baiju as Selli, KS Ravikumar as Kandhasaami, Suraj Venjaramoodu as Bharathan, Karunas as Kasi Maayan, and Jayaram as Muthu Selvan.

The film features music composed by GV Prakash Kumar, with the first single “Vaaya Karasami” already emerging as a chartbuster and trending across streaming platforms. With its historical setting, emotionally driven narrative, and a strong creative collaboration between director and star, Kara is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Tamil releases of the season.
