From scale to story: RJ Balaji shares exciting details about Suriya’s Karuppu

Director RJ Balaji opens up about the scale and vision of Karuppu, praising Suriya’s humility while promising a family entertainer that blends commercial appeal with a meaningful social message.

Director RJ Balaji has opened up about his upcoming film Karuppu, describing it as the most ambitious project of his career so far. In a recent interview, the filmmaker revealed that the scale of Karuppu is significantly larger compared to his previous works, calling it “almost fifteen times bigger” in terms of vision and execution.

Speaking about working with Suriya, RJ Balaji praised the actor’s humility and dedication on set. Despite being a leading superstar, Suriya reportedly carried himself with the enthusiasm and discipline of a newcomer throughout the shoot, creating a positive and collaborative working environment.

RJ Balaji further explained that Karuppu is designed as a strong commercial entertainer aimed at family audiences. He noted that recent Tamil cinema has often portrayed heroes as gangsters, dons, or police officers, leaving little space for relatable everyday characters. According to the director, the heroes he admired growing up represented ordinary professions such as teachers, drivers, milkmen, or small business owners. With Karuppu, he aims to revive that grounded storytelling approach while still delivering mass entertainment.

The filmmaker also emphasized that cinema should offer audiences something meaningful beyond entertainment. He shared that Karuppu blends commercial elements with a socially relevant message, ensuring viewers leave theatres with a lasting takeaway.

Scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on May 14, Karuppu marks the much awaited on-screen reunion of Suriya and Trisha after several years. The film features a strong ensemble cast including Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, Anagha Maya Ravi, Supreeth Reddy, and Sshivada in key roles. RJ Balaji himself is also set to appear in an extended role, which is said to feature a surprise element for audiences.

The film is produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, with music composed by Sai Abhyankkar. The technical team includes cinematographer GK Vishnu and editor Kalaivanan, promising a polished cinematic experience.

With its blend of commercial appeal, relatable storytelling, and social messaging, Karuppu is shaping up to be one of the notable theatrical releases of the summer season.
