Makers of Draupathi 2 thank Kalaipuli Thanu after Theri re-release is deferred
Director Mohan G and the producer of Draupathi 2 thanked Kalaipuli S. Thanu for postponing Theri’s re-release, allowing smaller films better theatrical visibility.
In a notable show of industry support, the team behind the upcoming historical drama Draupathi 2 has publicly expressed their appreciation to veteran producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu after he agreed to postpone the planned re-release of actor Vijay’s blockbuster Theri. The decision was taken to make room for smaller films slated to hit screens this week.
Originally scheduled for a 23rd January re-release, Theri – directed by Atlee and released in 2016, was expected to return to theaters following the delay of Vijay’s Jana Nayagan. However, with several new films, including Draupathi 2 and Hot Spot 2 Much, gearing up for release in the same period, filmmakers approached Thanu with a plea to reconsider the date.
Director Mohan G Kshatriyan, whose Draupathi 2 has been rescheduled for a 23rd January theatrical debut, had taken to social media to urge Thanu to delay Theri’s re-release so that his film and others could secure showtime on primary screens. Thanu’s subsequent decision to defer the re-release was seen as a generous gesture toward emerging filmmakers and producers.
After the announcement, Mohan G, alongside producer Sola Shakkaravarthi, visited Thanu and extended their heartfelt thanks in posts on X, underscoring how the move will help Draupathi 2 and other smaller ventures gain better visibility at the box office.
The producer of Hot Spot 2 Much also backed the request, highlighting a broader industry sentiment favoring cooperative planning to benefit films that might otherwise be overshadowed by the re-release of a major star vehicle. Many others in the Tamil film community have likewise praised Thanu’s decision, citing it as an example of mentorship and support within the industry.
Kalaipuli Thanu has stated that a new date for Theri’s re-release will be announced later, keeping fans and theater owners eagerly awaiting the update.
