Love stories and feel good films are coming in thick and fast in Tamil cinema, and there’s one every week this month. In the same line, Bigg Boss Raju’s debut film in Bun Butter Jam arrives as a romantic comedy that has enough elements in it to keep audiences interested for most parts.
Bun Butter Jam is about a man, his friend and his girlfriend, and whether all the other characters in his life turn out according to his will or not. The film rolls out as a romantic comedy in the first half with Raju’s character going and his love story moving forward. Director Raghav Mirdath ensures that his film is scattered with dollops of comedy from start to finish, though there are not many big LOL moments. The film departs from its comic space and has a more matured and focused idea in the second half, though it could have been tightened a bit on the whole. At 147 minutes, Bun Butter Jam could have some of its dull portions chopped off so that we could have got a smoother film at the end.
Raju has done really well in his debut film as a lead, and his performance is both emotionally and comically loaded and well executed. The actor has a nice ring to his dialogue delivery.
The heroines are just decent fits, and a better female lead would have pumped up the film higher.
However, the real highlight are in the casting of Saranya Ponvannan and Devadarshini who both rule the roost with their comic scenes. Nivas Prasanna’s superb album is a big plus to the film, and he uplifts the film like anything with his score. The visuals are also nicely carried out.
Overall, Bun Butter Jam is a nicely presented youthful entertainer that does its job right. It may not have great shakes but it does entertain in patches.
