Tamil cinema bid an emotional farewell to legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja on Thursday (June 11) as his final rites were conducted with full state honours in his native district of Theni. The iconic director, who passed away at the age of 84, was laid to rest in the presence of family members, film personalities, political leaders, and thousands of admirers.
Bharathiraja’s mortal remains were taken in a solemn funeral procession from his residence to the burial site near his farmhouse. Large crowds gathered along the route to pay their last respects to the filmmaker who transformed Tamil cinema with his realistic portrayal of rural life and culture.
As a mark of respect for his immense contribution to Indian cinema, the Tamil Nadu government accorded full state honours during the final ceremony. The farewell was marked by a 72-gun salute, creating an emotional moment for those who had assembled to bid goodbye to the veteran filmmaker.
Several prominent personalities from the film industry and public life attended the funeral rites in Theni. Lyricist Vairamuthu, actor Raadhika, and politician Seeman were among those present. Earlier, leading stars including Vijay, Rajinikanth, and Kamal Haasan paid their respects to Bharathiraja in Chennai.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers in Tamil cinema, Bharathiraja revolutionized storytelling by bringing village-based narratives and realistic characters to the big screen. His contribution to cinema earned him widespread acclaim and several prestigious honours over a career spanning decades.
